Connecting product ambition to who funds it
How should packaging, funding and demand evidence shape further product investment?
The situation
A product discussion had become centred on packaging: whether a capability should be sold separately or as part of a broader platform.
My contribution
I brought the discussion back to the economics. Who would pay for continued development? Who would carry the operating costs? How much of the proposed revenue would remain available to support the product? And what evidence showed that users would actually pay?
My reasoning
My concern was that a packaging choice could create an open-ended development commitment before demand had been validated. I asked for the alternatives to be examined together with their funding responsibilities and longer-term consequences.
I supported testing with real users. Expressions of enthusiasm were useful signals, but the investment decision still needed evidence of usage and willingness to pay.
What changed
My contribution was to connect product positioning, customer access and development economics in one decision. At that stage, the commercial assumptions and pilot outcomes remained unverified.
